WORD FROM THE
CEO

Welcome to the March 2009 issue of the Kenya Film Commission’s e-newsletter.

Film going for Kenyans for a very long time meant only Hollywood. Some even said that if there was a Kenyan culture, it was to a large extent the creation of … Hollywood.

But Kenyans began to realize that it was unhealthy to see only other people’s images and never to see anything of our own when we went to the movies..
Kenyans wanted to make movies in their own country, and they began a campaign to persuade the Government to give some support for filmmaking by Kenyans.

AFRICA SINEMA CLUB LAUNCHES ‘FORMULA X’

The Kenya Film Commission in conjunction with Serengeti Studio launched the film “Formula X” on the 13th of November, 2008 at the Nu metro Westgate under the umbrella of the Africa Sinema Club.

The well attended event saw the coming together of film makers and people interested in the film industry to celebrate the launch of the film. The premiere film night was attended by 300 guests- supporters of film and the media. Right off the bat, Formula X could easily be one of the best local films so far.

Without appearing overly dramatic, Formula X a co- production between light Media and Serengeti studios, still contains the necessary amount of suspense and action, and the use of retrospective story-telling helps spread the feel of the film. The producers’ decision to use real and diverse locations, as well as situations (a room in campus, an interrogation cell, and actual police officers responding to a distress call) adds a lot to the credibility of the movie, something that many local productions lack.

Thematically, Formula X depicts several issues. Unemployment (and its seemingly inevitable resort to crime) is explored in Juma’s life, and many young people will identify with his ‘hustling’ – from trying his hand at selling insurance, to hawking various wares and finally falling back on the ‘(criminal but) easy way out’.

FORMULA X SYNOPSIS

Formula X is a story that revolves around the twist that befalls a young, brilliant scientist one fateful Friday in Nairobi, Kenya. Frank, 29 the main character drives home with LISA, 24, his secretary. As he shows her around his fabulous new house, he meets Juma a paid criminal that was sent to his house by a long time business rival to steal what could become the most expensive vaccine in medical history. The plot thickens when Franks’ wife, Cindy, 25, returns home after her business flight is cancelled and finds the trio in her living room. The confrontation and unfolding drama of betrayal and deceit is told in a fast paced narrative style that reveals the inner chaos of characters seeking love, money, fulfillment and vengeance in a modern, African capital city.

Formula X features notable cameos by local celebrities such as Karma, Gich Boy, Nonini, and Chris Kirubi among other surprises. They are superbly cast to play their roles and take this movie told in a nonlinear fashion to new heights in Kenyan cinema.  The soundtrack will be released along with the movie through SoulChild Records. It features some new tracks from Lady Bee featuring Nonini, Eric Wainaina as well as some previously released tracks such as “Kilio” by JOGG C.

The Cast of Formula X are well know names in the industry. They have featured in several movies as well as TV commercials.

They include names like, Peter King who plays Frank the scientist. He has won the Best Actor Award for his role in ‘Help’ by Robbie Bresson at the 2007 Kenya International Film Festival. He has also acted in the TV series Makutano Junction as well as various dramas.

Nice Githinji who plays Lisa, Franks secretary and love interest has acted in the feature film, ‘Benta’ in 2007 as well as the TV series ‘Better Days’. She has also produced a feature film, All the Girls Together.
