WORD FROM THE
CEO

Welcome to the March 2009 issue of the Kenya Film Commission’s e-newsletter.

Film going for Kenyans for a very long time meant only Hollywood. Some even said that if there was a Kenyan culture, it was to a large extent the creation of … Hollywood.

But Kenyans began to realize that it was unhealthy to see only other people’s images and never to see anything of our own when we went to the movies..
Kenyans wanted to make movies in their own country, and they began a campaign to persuade the Government to give some support for filmmaking by Kenyans.

KALASHA - KENYA FILM AND TELEVISION AWARDS

We are excited to unveil the first ever Film and Television Awards in Kenya, the Kalasha Awards.

We realize that it is time for the next phase in the growth of the Television and Film industries in Kenya. The industries have been growing in leaps and bounds with the quality of productions improving with every production released. Television producers and filmmakers have continued to pursue the art faithfully and this has resulted in immense growth of viewership.

To encourage production and bring further growth to the industry, there is need to reward film-makers and television producers.

''We plan to use these awards as a watershed of relationships with Hollywood and work with the local industry. Unless we link our industry with where the major film activities are, our industry will still remain as it is," says Mr. Maingi.

The Gala Event
The Awards will be held on 25th April, 2009 and will recognize and reward outstanding Film and Television productions and the people behind them.
The gala event will be a glitzy, sassy affair in line with the Emmy and Oscar Awards and a first for Kenya. Key highlights include:

  • Coverage by all media houses.
  • Multi camera set-up.
  • Full branding of entire event site.
  • A multi-level, three-dimensional mammoth stage inside the venue
  • Giant screen in the middle of the stage and others all round the stage.
  • A showcase of Kenyan animators’ skills.
  • A theatrical journey through the history of film in the country.
  • Performances by leading entertainers.
  • A spectacular outdoor firework display.
  • Cutting-edge laser shows and lights displays.
  • Hilarious skits and sketches.

It is the people behind the awards that are the selling point as well as the strength of the awards. KFC has strategically rallied the private sector to participate in the event, with captains of the private sector forming the bulk of the board of trustees endeared to run and manage the awards.
